Goldwing 7 Volt Regulators

The Problem
If you have a GL1000, GL1100 or GL1200Std Goldwing with mechanical (not electronic LCD) temperature and fuel gauges, you've had this problem. Or...you will. It's only a matter of time. You'll start noticing that your temperature and fuel gauges are reading off the scale - the temperature is in the red, and the fuel shows full. The only thing is, the bike isn't overheating, and you know you've only got a quarter tank left. Or...even worse: your bike is operating normally, and suddenly your temperature and fuel gauges just turn off, and look like the picture above. How much fuel have you got left? You'll have to guess!
The Cause
What's causing it? A faulty, worn-out 7 volt voltage regulator. Behind the fuel and temperature gauges is a special voltage regulator that turns your motorcycle's normal 12 volts into the 7 volts on which these two gauges run. When it starts to fail, it typically starts doing so intermittently. Left in a failed state, it can cause damage - allowing a full 12 volts into your temperature and fuel gauges, destroying the delicate coils inside! That gets expensive, requiring the replacement of the entire center gauge cluster!
The Diagnosis
Now let me state one thing: If one of the two gauges is working normally, and the other is not, then your problem is not your 7 volt regulator. But if both of them are not working correctly - it's time to replace that regulator. The symptoms of a failed 7 volt regulator are both fuel and temperature gauges reading high, or both reading zero, and it commonly happens intermittently for a while before complete failure.
The Solution
Honda's replacement part for this common failure item on older Goldwings costs over a hundred dollars! Other aftermarket suppliers charge $60 or more for a copy of the original part. Now you can replace this failed part with a state-of-the-art solid-state modern voltage regulator that will not fail after years of use like the original equipment, and save a lot of money in the process! This modern replacement is available for just $34.99.

Can I fix it myself?
This 7-volt regulator has been designed and manufactured by WingAdmin - the owner of this web site - originally to fix this exact problem on his very own 1982 GL1100A. I had so many people asking me to make one for them as well, I decided to buy a large amount of parts and make them in bulk, to bring the cost of production down. It is designed to plug in exactly in place of your OEM unit. Detailed instructions with pictures are included, and full unlimited support is provided on this web site. Replacing this regulator on your motorcycle is well within the capabilities of a casual home DIY mechanic and requires only a couple screwdrivers and 30 to 45 minutes time.
These regulators are built to withstand years of abuse. They are shockproof, waterproof and fully tested before shipping.
While the regulators are identical, the wire terminations are different depending on the model and year of your Goldwing motorcycle:
Type A: 1975, 1976, 1977 GL1000 Goldwing
Type B: 1978, 1979 GL1000 Goldwing
Type C: All GL1100 and GL1200Std Goldwings (with standard, non-LCD gauges)
Applicable models:
1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 GL1000 Goldwing (replaces parts no. 31410-371-007 and 31410-371-008)
1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 GL1100 Goldwing (replaces part no. 31410-463-008)
1984 GL1200 Goldwing (replaces part no. 31410-463-008)
Other Motorcycles: Yes, Honda used this 7 volt regulator in a lot of motorcycles other than the Goldwing. You can purchase it and use it in your old Honda as well - however, it is supported on, and instructions are supplied for, Goldwings only.
